5 Important Steps When Packing for a Move
Packing for a move often feels like a monumental task that will never get done. There’s a good reason for that- consider just how many details you have to worry about. However, with some planning and patience, packing doesn’t have to completely overwhelm you. Read on for five important steps to follow when you are packing for a move.
1.Always Declutter First
You never want to move with items that you don’t really need. It just creates extra work for you in the long run. Lighten your workload before your move by decluttering first. Go room by room and create piles out of your belongings. The best way is to have three piles when you are done. One will be the pile that you save, one will be what can be donated, and the last will be what gets thrown out.
2.Come Up With a Labeling System
As you pack, you will want to make sure that you make it easy on yourself when you end up in your new space. You may not be worried about it now, but throwing your belongings haphazardly into boxes because you are in a rush will make it difficult later. Consider different colors of tape for each room. For example, red for the kitchen, green for the bathroom, and blue for the bedroom. This allows you to quickly place each box in the appropriate room. You should also be specific when you write what is in the box. Instead of “kitchen,” write “pots and pans.”
Breaking up the packing will make the task much simpler for you. Instead of packing a little bit here and there, commit yourself to one room at a time. Always start in areas that are not used as much, such as the basement or spare bedroom. Once you get into rooms that are used frequently make sure you leave items that you will still use before the actual date of your move. For example, don’t pack your coffee maker if you are just going to dig it out to use before you move.
4.Pack an Essentials Box
Right before you actually move out of your home, pack a box with all of the essentials you will need for your first night in your new place. This may include phone chargers, a set of eating utensils, clean towels, a shower curtain, snacks, laptops, and important papers. You won’t want to be tearing through multiple boxes looking for something important once you arrive at your new home.
5.Don’t Wait Until the Last Minute
Packing can seem like a monumental task. It can be, but the more you prepare, the easier it will be. Make sure you have all of your packing supplies in one place early on. Designate a time to start packing. Take it slow and steady. That way, it won’t become so overwhelming that you just start throwing your belongings anywhere.
