7 Tips For Finding Your Dream Job
Whether you are fresh out of college or a seasoned professional looking for a career change, finding your dream job can be a full-time project. Job prospecting is a daunting task, but here are seven tips you can use to land your dream position!
1. Make a List of Priorities
We all want to be paid well at our jobs. However, there is much more to a career than just money, especially since you will likely be doing that job until you retire. Career fulfillment stems from shared priorities with the company you work for. List your top three priorities and search for companies that match.
2. Read the Job Description More Than Once
Don’t waste your time or the company’s time by applying for jobs you aren’t qualified for. While companies can sometimes have unrealistic expectations, they often aren’t willing to budge on their requirements. If you aren’t qualified on paper to do your dream job, you can further your qualifications through school or start your own company doing what you love.
3. Know Your Strengths (And Your Weaknesses)
Employers want to know what you are and aren’t good at. Luckily, no job requires you to be perfect at everything. Taking a career skills assessment test will allow you to nail down what marketable abilities you can put on your resume. You can also include the skills you acquired from past jobs.
4. Have a Shortlist of Companies
Think back to when you applied for colleges. You probably picked schools based on several criteria that were important to you. Choosing a company to work for is no different. While you may not get into your first choice, keeping a list of companies you would like to work for makes it easy to jump on any jobs they post.
5. Don’t Forget to Network
Who do you know that is already in your dream field? What public conferences or events are taking place that you can attend? Sometimes landing your dream job is as easy as connecting with the right person. Your dream job may not be posted on the job board, but the right person could get you in the door. Networking should be your top method of career searching.
6. Tailor Your Resume to the Job Description
If you find a job that you want to apply for, go the extra mile and tailor your resume to match the job description. Do this by giving examples of the results of your previous work that are relevant to the job. A list of skills won’t create as much of an impact as a list of tangible results.
7. Find a Mentor
While you are out networking, you may find someone who is doing exactly what you want to be doing. You may be able to learn from this person by asking questions and spending time with them regularly. Finding someone who already has your dream job and who is willing to mentor you gives you a huge advantage.
Finding your dream job isn’t impossible as long as you are willing to put in the effort to find it. Don’t forget to use your network and look in less obvious places for job openings. Marketing your strengths will also help you land your dream job.
