8 Tips For Decorating Your New Home

There are so many options, color schemes and palettes to consider when you’re starting out in a new home. It can pretty overwhelming when you’re first getting started. However, if you implement the following tips, you’ll be able to gain more clarity on your vision and fall in love with your home even more.

1. Incorporate the use of paint.
Consider painting the ceiling a different color from the rest of the room. The ceiling can serve as its own statement wall. Paint is one of the easiest and most inexpensive ways to transform and decorate a home.

2. Create stunning window treatments.
Take a look at the overall color scheme in order to pick out complementary curtains. When you’re creating the window treatment, include different layers for depth and visual interest. Plus, when you’re ready for bed, there’s nothing like the ability to get the blackout effect. You can use sheer curtains in addition to thick, velvet curtains. Use curtain pullbacks to artfully allow sunlight to come through during the daytime.

3. Add natural elements.
Plants are natural air purifiers. Choose plants like fiddleleaf fig trees and spider plants. If you don’t have a green thumb, choose an option like a succulent that’s low-maintenance.

4. Pick a cohesive color scheme.
Do a Google search in order to find beautiful interior design examples that appeal to your senses. Find inspiration from the various colors you see in those looks. Once you gather a common color theme, assign specific colors to different parts of the room (walls, furniture, etc.).

5. Don’t be afraid to try different patterns.
Use throw pillows, area rugs and artwork as canvases to highlight various prints, patterns and textures. Patterns have a way of adding personality to a room. Just make sure the patterns don’t overpower each other.

6. Include an array of artwork.
You can hang really interesting pieces of artwork. Visit online art shops, Etsy shops and garage sales to find eclectic art that fits your taste. You can also do a gallery wall featuring pictures of your family and friends. Don’t just stop at hanging canvases and portraits. Don’t forget about statues, pottery and art installations.

7. Hang mirrors.
Mirrors are excellent for creating a specific illusion. When mirrors are properly positioned, they can make a room look even larger. If you’d like to increase the amount of natural light coming into a room, hang a mirror across from an open window to maximize the impact.

8. Invest in good furniture.
If there’s anywhere you are going to want to spend a lot of money, spend the money on durable furniture. You want your furniture to last. Sectionals are increasingly popular because they are versatile and comfortable. It’s best to choose neutral colors for your major furniture pieces because you don’t want to get locked into a dated look.

As you work toward creating an ideal look for your home, be patient. Step back to assess the work. As you take your time and implement these tips, you’ll be able to decorate a home you’ll enjoy for years to come.
