Top 4 Tips for Getting Fitted for Hearing Aids

Hearing loss is a problem that most believe only affects older adults. However, this is untrue as anyone, even children, can have hearing loss. No matter what your age, if you have hearing loss and plan on getting hearing aids, there are four tips that can help you when you plan on getting fitted for the devices.

Bring Support with You

It’s important to stay relaxed for your hearing aid fitting. One of the best ways to do that is to bring along a support system in the form of a close friend or family member. Although this is an exciting time as you look forward to being able to hear better, you will probably be nervous, and a friend or family member can help you feel more at ease.

Know What to Expect

Before you go to your hearing aid fitting appointment, you should do your homework and read up on what you can expect when you get there. If you know someone else who already wears a hearing aid, talk to them and ask them about their own personal experience. You can also do an online search about what to expect. This can better prepare you once it comes time for your appointment.

In general, you will have one last hearing test with your audiologist to ensure that you are fitted with the right hearing aids. You will have a thin tube inserted in your ears to check your response to volumes of sound. There is a second part of this test that involves hearing aids being placed in your ears to balance out the sound. Of course, your audiologist will also make sure your hearing aids are comfortable when in your ears.

Ask as Many Questions as Possible

Before you have your appointment, you should write down any questions you have about a hearing aid fitting. Your audiologist will explain everything to you, from learning which hearing aid batteries you need, to properly cleaning and caring for your hearing aids, to adjusting the mode on your devices. If anything is unclear, ask your audiologist to clarify for you or physically show you how to do a certain thing with your hearing aids. You can also take notes while at your appointment so you don’t forget anything.

Be Patient

It’s also important to be patient while at your hearing aid fitting appointment. You can then wear your hearing aids, but keep in mind that it might take some time for you to get used to them. After all, there are new sounds that you may not have ever heard before. You will gradually get used to them.

With these tips in mind, you will have a successful appointment when getting fitted for hearing aids. You will hear better and feel better overall.
